______________________________________________________________ Quartermaster Clutch Installation Information
Quarter Master Typical 3 Disc
Make sure that the pilot bearing is in good shape, if it is not brand new. Bell Housing Alignment Inspection
Input Shaft Inspection Inspect the input shaft of your transmission for any signs of twisting or bending. Check to make sure that the clutch disc(s) slide all the way on the input shaft without binding. Do not use Anti-seize or any other type of lubricants on the splines of the input shaft. Flywheel Installation Insert the clutch bolts into the flywheel from the back side. (This is not required if the flywheel has spline nuts.) Bolt the flywheel to the crankshaft and torque as required. We recommend the use of a medium strength thread locking compound. DO NOT USE STAR WASHERS ! Clutch Housing Installation Install the clutch housing over the bolts, placing it squarely onto the flywheel. Index one flat of the bolt head against the lip on the back side of the flywheel. Check to make sure that the bolts fit freely into the housing. Severe damage to the clutch will occur if these bolts bind in any way. For flywheels with spline nuts install the housing squarely over the flywheel register with bolt holes aligned. Clutch Pac and Floater Plate Installations One Disc Clutches:
Install the clutch disc against the flywheel with the rivet heads (stamped Q.M.I.)
facing the engine. There are two types of two disc clutch pacs. The first type and most common is supplied with two end clutch discs. The end clutch disc has a hub which protrudes from only one side of the disc. Install the Clutch Pac and Floater Plate in this order:
Install the Clutch Pac and Floater Plate in this order:
Examine the clutch discs carefully. Two of the clutch discs are identical, these are called end discs. The other clutch disc is called a center disc, it has a hub that is flat on both sides. Install the Clutch Pac and Floater Plates in this order:
Pressure Plate and Clutch Cover Installation With the clutch and floater plate(s) in position, install the pressure plate into the housing with flat side against the clutch disc. Install the clutch cover onto the housing. Check the dowel pin alignment where applicable. If your clutch bolts have been installed from the backside of the flywheel, install the washers and thread the nuts onto the bolts finger tight. If your flywheel has spline nuts, install the bolts and washers finger tight. Align the clutch disc(s) with a good input shaft and torque the nuts or bolts to 20 ft./lbs. for 7.25 and 5.5, 10-12 ft./lbs. for 4.5. Release Bearing Quarter Master Pro Series clutches are designed to be used with a heavy-duty radius face release bearing. Do not use a flat face release bearing. You should have a minimum of .100" clearance between the release bearing and the clutch fingers. Install a return spring on the clutch linkage. This will keep the release bearing from riding on the clutch fingers. You should also install a positive stop on the clutch pedal to limit clutch pedal travel. Overtraveling the diaphragm spring (clutch fingers) will shorten the life of the clutch and also lead to premature failure of the engine thrust bearing. Clutch Disc Maintenance Replace the clutch discs when needed, and your Quarter Master clutch will last many seasons of racing. |
